From January to March 2019, Mozambique was hit by heavy rains, winds, and floods in the central and northern regions of the country, specifically in the Zambezi, Licungo, and Chire River basins, with severe economic and social repercussions, resulting in increased vulnerability and serious damage to the social and productive infrastructures of the affected areas.
Around 30,000 houses, 2,362 classrooms, and 17 health units were damaged, some partially and others completely destroyed.
The Beira Municipal Council created the “Post-Cyclone Idai Recovery and Resilience” plan, funded by the Dutch Embassy. As part of the implementation of the project, SDUBeira was selected as the implementing entity for the reconstruction projects of municipal infrastructures, specifically the neighborhood headquarters and administrative posts. Their responsibilities include:
– Inventory and assessment of the conditions of damaged municipal infrastructures in the city of Beira
– Preparation of tenders for the hiring of contractors and consultants necessary for the implementation of the programs referenced in the “Post-Idai Reconstruction and Resilience” plan
– Planning and implementation of rehabilitation and resilience policies for the buildings
– Preparation of progress and completion reports of the respective works.
